Replace Engine Gaskets - Sump, Valve Covers, etc.

Vehicle: 1970 Steyr-Puch Haflinger

Status: Complete

Priority: Medium

Estimated Time: 6 hours

Estimated Cost: $145

Category: Engine

Task Description

Replace all external engine gaskets including sump gasket, valve cover gaskets, and other accessible gaskets to eliminate oil leaks and ensure proper sealing.

Parts Required

  • Sump/oil pan gasket
  • Valve cover gaskets (2x for boxer engine)
  • Timing cover gasket (if applicable)
  • Oil pump gasket (if accessible)
  • Gasket sealant (appropriate type)
  • Engine degreaser
  • New oil and filter
  • Thread locker (medium strength)

Tools Needed

  • Socket set
  • Screwdrivers
  • Gasket scraper
  • Wire brush
  • Torque wrench
  • Oil drain pan
  • Clean rags
  • Straight edge
  • Parts cleaning solvent

Procedure

Preparation

  1. Degrease engine thoroughly to identify all leaks
  2. Run engine to warm oil for drainage
  3. Drain engine oil completely

Valve Cover Gaskets

  1. Remove spark plug leads for access
  2. Remove valve cover bolts (note sequence)
  3. Carefully pry off valve covers
  4. Clean all old gasket material from covers and heads
  5. Check valve cover flatness with straight edge
  6. Install new gaskets (dry or with sealant per manufacturer)
  7. Reinstall covers with correct bolt torque pattern
  8. Torque to specification (typically 8-10 Nm)

Sump Gasket

  1. Support engine if necessary
  2. Remove sump bolts systematically
  3. Lower sump carefully (oil will drip)
  4. Clean sump thoroughly inside and out
  5. Clean gasket surface on engine block
  6. Check sump flange for warping
  7. Apply gasket sealant if specified
  8. Position new gasket carefully
  9. Reinstall sump with new gasket
  10. Tighten bolts in cross pattern to spec
  11. Avoid over-tightening (can cause leaks)

Other Gaskets

  1. Replace timing cover gasket if leaking
  2. Address any other accessible gaskets
  3. Use appropriate sealant where specified

Final Steps

  1. Allow sealant to cure per instructions
  2. Refill engine with oil
  3. Start engine and check for leaks
  4. Re-torque valve covers after heat cycle
  5. Clean any residual oil from engine

Notes

The Haflinger’s air-cooled boxer engine has valve covers on the sides. Access can be limited, so patience is needed. Some gaskets may need sealant while others should be installed dry - check specifications. Consider replacing gaskets as a set since labor is the main cost.
